I recently embarked on a DIY project with Paulownia wood. The 1.5cm thick boards cost 1.2k including shipping, which was a good price for the thickness. The problem is, the boards are quite soft, so they need to be handled with care.
While unboxing, I accidentally scratched them, which was heartbreaking. Luckily, the boards were varnished today with Sanqing varnish, and the results are quite good. I was originally debating whether to use wood wax oil or varnish, but I heard that other people who used wood wax had to constantly sand them. Thinking about the hassle, I decided to go with varnish, which I think is more convenient.
By the way, I also considered E0 boards, but the quantity was too small, so they were reluctant to do it. After all, it's not load-bearing, so I have to be careful with it.
Overall, this DIY project has made me realize the importance of choosing the right board. While the Paulownia boards are a bit soft, the varnish works quite well. I also learned that not all boards are suitable for all uses, and you have to choose according to your needs. I hope my experience can give you some reference and help you avoid detours on the road of DIY.
